THE STORY OF SHAIKH ABU YAZID AL-BUSTHAMY AND A DOG

The story of Abu Yazid Al-Busthomi and a dog is one of many stories of wisdom that make us aware of the nature of purifying the heart.

Abu Yazid was a third-century Hijri Sufi scholar of Persian / Persian nationality or the present name of Iran.
He was born in 188 H (804 M) his small name is Tayfur.

As a teenager, Abu Yazid studied the Al-Qur'an and the Hadith of the Prophet and then studied the jurisprudence of the Hanafi School before finally taking the path of Sufism.
As a Sufi, his maqom (position) of makrifat is not in doubt.
Once it occurred to his heart to ask Allah Ta'ala to give him the attitude of indifference to food and women, then his heart said: "Should I ask Allah for something that the Prophet Muhammad never asked for?"
Even because of the height of his knowledge, he punishes himself if he violates it.

One day Abu Yazid Al-Busthomi got valuable knowledge from a dog on the side of the road.
As usual, Abu Yazid liked to walk alone at night. Then he saw a dog walking towards him.
When the dog approached him, Abu Yazid lifted his cloak worried that he would be touched by the dog which he said was unclean.

Spontaneously the dog stopped and kept looking at him.
Somehow Abu Yazid seemed to hear the dog say to him.
"My body is dry and will not make you unclean. Even if you feel unclean, all you have to do is wash 7 times with water and soil, then the uncleanness on your body will disappear. But if you lift your robe because you consider yourself more noble, then consider me a dog that
despised, then the uncleanness that sticks to your heart will not be clean even if you wash it with the 7 oceans of the seas.

Hearing that, Abu Yazid gasped and apologized to the dog.
As a sign of his sincere apology, Abu Yazid then invited the dog to be friends and walk together.
But the dog refused it.

_" You don't deserve to walk with me. Because those who glorify you will scorn and stone me. I don't know why they consider me contemptible, even though I surrender myself to the Creator of this form. See I don't keep and bring even a bone, while you still have a sack of grain," said the dog leaving Abu Yazid._

Abu Yazid was silent and said: "O Allah, I am not worthy to walk with a dog of Your creation. How do I feel worthy to walk with You, forgive me and purify my heart of all dirt."

Since that incident, Sheikh Abu Yazid has always glorified and loved all of God's creatures unconditionally.
This story reminds us of a beautiful message spoken by Allah Ta'ala in the Qur'an.

‎فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَى

"So do not say that you are holy. He is the one who knows best about those who are pious".
(QS. An-Najm: 32)
